On November 21, Kerala launched its latest initiative to ensure the safety of women in the State—a taxi service operated by women entrepreneurs for women travellers. She Taxi is a Gender Park programme. Gender Park is an institution under the Department of Social Justice that works towards gender equity.
Actress Manju Warrier—She Taxi’s goodwill ambassador—flagged off the service ceremony at Trivandrum’s Kanakakkunnu Palace.
Dr. M. K. Muneer, Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice; K. Muraleedharan, MLA; Rishi Raj Singh, IPS; K. Chandrika, Mayor, Trivandrum; Sabriye Tenberken, Founder, Kanthari International; Dr. Sindhuja Varma, Vice President, eWIT, Technopark; Amit Passi, Head of BPO and Board Director, Allianz, Technopark; and other dignitaries were also present at the ceremony.
K. Muraleedharan, MLA, inaugurated the call centre (accessible at 859 000 0543) set up for She Taxi operations, and Transport Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh, IPS, launched the official She Taxi website and logo.
The first women drivers of the fleet of cabs—Annie Surendran, Jaicy Ramesh, Rasiya Begum Noushad, Heera P., and Asha Kumari—received the keys from Manju Warrier.
Maruti Suzuki Ltd. is the supplier of the taxis. It also imparts training to the women drivers. The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC) provides the financial support for the entrepreneurs. Trivandrum Technopark-based Rain Concert Technologies will set up the 24-hour call centre for the service and handle the marketing operations.
‘She Taxi’ is a 24X7 service available for booking via mobile phones and online. Women travelling alone or with families can dial the customer care centre, which will provide them with a Unique Identification Code and the vehicle number on their mobile phones.
All cabs are metered and have an electronic payment system allowing the user to pay using credit or debit cards or cash.
The She Taxis come with multiple security systems for the safety of the drivers as well as the passengers. A control room tracks the taxis real-time using GPS, and there are personal emergency alert switches for both the driver and the passenger inside the car. The drivers also have a safety alert app is installed on their mobile phones.
The cabs have a map of all emergency response systems in the city. Public safety officers will be available for their assistance. The drivers will also be given training in self-defense as well as good driving practices.
