Realising the potential within Cochin city , the KSRTC has taken note of the patronage by the travelling public for the 50 Thirukochi series of buses which were introduced recently into cochin and its suburbs.
The average daily collection of each Thirukochi bus is said to have increased to over Rs 4,000. This is expected to increase further to Rs. 6,000 as passengers attune their schedule in keeping with the bus timings. Many commuters who were so far dependant on private buses have begun opting for the RTC services as they are punctual, comfortable and safer to travel.
The RTC is keeping all options open, including operating more Thirukochi services in routes where there is inadequate public transport. Ten more non-AC buses purchased under the JNNURM scheme would soon begin service in Kochi.
Apart from overcrowding in private buses the introduction of these buses will help partly overcome traffic congestion created by cars and two-wheelers , clearly showing the crying need for better public transport in this ever growing city.
