Aakash, developed by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), will be rolled out nationally in the next few months.

The tablet is being developed by a team at IIT Bombay under the leadership of Padmashree D. B. Phatak. Aakash runs on dual FOSS-based operating systems—Android and Ubuntu 12— and applications can be developed on either of these platforms.

The first workshop is scheduled for February 16–17, 2013, at Technopark. The workshop will benefit independent developers, students, and IT companies planning to develop applications on Aakash.

The first workshop will cover the basics of designing, implementing, debugging, testing, and version control for applications on Aakash, using both the Ubuntu and Android platforms, in addition to topics on the marketing and release mechanisms for the apps developed for the platform.
